(MADISON, Wis. - August 28, 2012) - Aleks Gregory is two-for-two in claiming career-best ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards finishes since joining Coulter Motorsports in August.
In his first-career short track start and second start with Coulter Motorsports, the 23-year-old rookie drove his No. 61 The Mosquito Patch Chevrolet to a 13th-place finish in the Herr's Live Life with Flavor 200 at Madison International Speedway Sunday afternoon.
"Short track racing is a lot different than anything I have ever done," said Gregory. "I am very happy with our finish today. We started 18th, were able to make up five positions and not put a scratch on the car- that was our goal for today and we accomplished that. All the guys on this Coulter Motorsports team did a great job. The car just kept getting better and better through each practice and into the race. These guys worked really hard and gave me a great The Mosquito Patch Chevrolet today."
In making his first-career short track start, Gregory had a steep learning curve and just two short 45-minute practice sessions to learn the ins and outs of Madison's half-mile oval on Saturday afternoon. Posting the 19th fastest time in the first session, Gregory improved to 17th overall in the second session before qualifying 18th for Sunday's 200-lap race.
Sunday arrived with gray skies and rain postponing the start of the Herr's Live Life with Flavor 200 by over three hours. When the green flag finally waved to kick off 200 laps of short track action, Gregory took his time negotiating Wisconsin's "Fastest Half Mile" and learning the short track racing ropes while maintaining his position in the top-20 for the first 70 laps.
When the second caution of the day waved on lap 74 Gregory radioed to his Coulter Motorsports crew that his car felt really good, so Crew Chief Jon Wolfe called Gregory to pit road for four tires and fuel with no adjustments and sent The Mosquito Patch Chevrolet back out in the 15th position. Racing resumed on lap 80 for another long green-flag run and Gregory maintained his position on the track while clicking off lap times quicker than several of the leaders.
A lap 130 caution brought Gregory back to pit road for the second and final time for two right side tires and a slight track bar adjustment. As the race restarted on lap 137, Gregory quickly climbed into the 13th position where he remained until the checkered flag waved after 8 overtimes laps, claiming his career-best ARCA Racing Series finish.
"Aleks did a tremendous job today," said Crew Chief Jon Wolfe. "He ran competitive lap times, made good clean passes on the track and took the checkered flag without a scratch on the car. We couldn't ask for anything more out of him in his first short track start. Aleks showed a tremendous amount of potential and talent today, and we are really looking forward to building upon that."
"I'm ecstatic- to be a part of this team is just awesome," said Gregory. "I'm very grateful for that. They are a great group of guys, and I don't want to be anywhere else. I am really looking forward to more strong runs in our future at Coulter Motorsports."
