(MILLVILLE, N.J. - July 3, 2012) - To say the weather was an obstacle this weekend would be an understatement.
In addition to the 95-degree plus temperatures at the track, a bad storm on Friday knocked out power at the teams hotel making preparations for Carter 2 Motorsports, C2M, first road course race difficult. Despite everything Mother Nature threw their way, the team drove away with a solid day at the New Jersey Motorsports Park, NJMP.
“We entered the weekend knowing that as a team the road course was going to be one of our major curve balls on the schedule,” said owner Roger Carter, who started the race in the No. 40 R.J. Nash Construction - Racedaysponsors.com. “Larry impressed us all with how quickly he picked up the tracks different configuration, and his solid finish showed for it.”
Team Messina Rookie Challenge candidate Larry Barford Jr. started The All-American Race Weekend presented by Global Barter Corporation in 25th position. By lap 25 he was running lap times quicker than his qualifying lap, and only gaining as the race went on.
Despite complaining of no grip Barford Jr., driving the No. 04 First Mariner Bank – Trauma Doc Dodge, stuck to the advice of his veteran crew chief Jeff McClure to save brakes and most importantly, stay on the track. While grip remained an issue with the blazing temperature, Barford Jr. solidly remained in the top 20 throughout the race, bringing the scratch free car home in 17th position.
“We were able to finish 17th today, with the car in one piece, and no scratches or dents, which is a huge accomplishment at a place like New Jersey,” said Barford Jr. “Car was losing brakes at almost half way, plus my cool box helmet a/c quit working and I was wrestling the car so much I got blisters on my hands. The C2M crew did a great job in helping me overcome everything, especially my spotters Austin and Dan who did an awesome job helping me get through the tricky track.”
Overall, NJMP turned out to be a successful points day for C2M. Barford Jr. entered the race 14th in Driver points and moved all the way to 11th position. “A special thanks to my team, C2M, for helping me get here so far,” said Barford Jr. “Now we have our sights set on cracking the top 10 and I’m really looking forward to seeing what the second half of the season brings our way.”
Next up for C2M and The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards is a much needed off weekend. Racing will resume in two weeks for a one-day show at Iowa Speedway for the Prairie Meadows 200 on Friday, July 13. The race will air live on SPEED at 9 p.m. Eastern, with live timing and scoring available at ARCARacing.com.
